Our seasons are not four equal parts. We have months when a child plays from dawn to sunset, and months that allow one hour before dusk.
Buy without accounting for that and your toy waits four months to start working.
1. The real season across most regions
October to April, outdoor play runs almost unrestricted in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Qassim. That is a full six months worth preparing for.
May to September the window narrows sharply, concentrating in two hours before sunset and one after dawn. Highland areas like Abha, Taif, and Al Baha differ: their season runs longer and stretches into summer itself.
2. Buy before the season, not at its peak
- September: buy and assemble.
- October to April: full use.
- May: clean and prepare for storage or shade.
- June to August: move indoors what can move.
3. What stays useful through summer
- Tables and chairs come indoors and host drawing and clay.
- Rocking horses stand in any corner and need no particular weather.
- Small playhouses move to the playroom and return in October.
- Small slides work in a spacious room with a mat beneath.
The move itself helps the child. A new setting restores novelty to an old toy, and families tell us this every summer.
4. Water changes the equation
Water toys turn the summer calculation upside down. A sand and water table makes midday bearable, and a water bouncer turns a hot yard into somewhere a child asks to go.
5. Sun and plastic
- Put fixed pieces under a canopy or where afternoon shade reaches.
- Cover trampoline and slide surfaces in peak months.
- Wipe dust weekly; fine sand scratches surfaces in the heat.
- Test a surface with your hand before your child sits on it at midday.
6. Dust and humidity vary by region
On the coast in Jeddah and Dammam humidity runs high, so metal parts want more care and a wipe after damp days. Inland, dust accumulates and wants regular washing.

7. The daily clock, not just the yearly one
- Dawn to eight — the coolest and least crowded hours.
- Late afternoon to sunset — when most families actually play.

8. Ramadan and school holidays shift the schedule
Play hours move with the household. During Ramadan the active window sits after Taraweeh, and in school holidays it spreads across the whole afternoon.
A corner that works in both needs one piece a child can use alone and quietly, not only pieces that need company and space.
9. The season changes behaviour, not just timing
Children play differently in cool weather: longer sessions, more running, more invented games. In heat they seek shade, water, and stillness.
Matching the toy to the mood of the season matters as much as matching it to the temperature.
10. Three things we do at Baby Story each season

11. Set the corner up two weeks before the first cool day

The practical rule: buy indoor pieces in spring and outdoor pieces in late summer. The indoor one arrives before the heat shuts you in; the outdoor one arrives before the weather turns.
